VIM (Ex-Crestor, Ex-OWL) is a classic, 1957 Islesboro, ME lobster yacht built by Newbert & Wallace in Thomaston, ME. She is a quintessential example of the pleasure boats based on lobstering hulls built in the second half of the 20th century and indigenous to Penobscot Bay. She is now fully restored and converted to cruising, party, and entertainment use.

VIM comes to the market from the collection of a passionate yachtsman and expert restorer of significant yachts and antique cars. VIM remains true to her heritage in terms of her profile, lines, all-wood structure, and construction method. However, the objective of her restoration was to transform a faded Maine utility and pleasure boat into a museum quality vessel with today’s conveniences and reliability, to serve as a beautiful and gracious cruising and entertaining platform.

Additional Information

VIM (USCG Documentation # 1250122) was built in 1957 by Newbert & Wallace of Thomaston, ME, builders of fishing and lobster boats, sardine carriers, and other commercial vessels, to a design by Roy Wallace. From 1947 to 1979 Newbert & Wallace built fourteen pleasure boats on lobster-boat hull shapes, ten of them 36’ LOA and four of them 38’ LOA, mainly for owners at Islesboro, Maine, a few in Southern New England, and one in Grosse Point, Michigan.

VIM was originally commissioned as QUESTOR for the Thorndike family of Milton, MA and Islesboro. For most of her early life, VIM (then named OWL) was owned by the Moseley family of Islesboro. She was also owned for a time by famed wooden-boat surveyor Giffy Full, and she’s featured in a dedicated chapter of the 1998 book Maine Lobsterboats by author Virginia Thorndike, daughter of her original owner.

In 2001 VIM was re-powered with a Yanmar 4-cylinder turbo-charged diesel inboard engine.

In 2013-14, QUESTOR/OWL, re-named VIM, was completely refurbished to state-of-the-art structural, technical, and cosmetic yacht standards – at Artisan Boatworks, Rockport, ME, with design and engineering support from Bob Stephens of Stephens Waring Yacht Design, Belfast, ME; and Barrington, RI-based Naval Architect Matthew Smith.

Unless otherwise indicated, specifications relate to work completed and new components installed during the 2013-14 refit.

HULL & EXTERIOR

- Sixty new laminated oak frames from the main bulkhead aft
- New planks at the turn of the bilge
- All planking, fasteners, and butts determined to be in “as new” condition
- All hull penetrations replaced with new bronze through-hulls
- Bottom paint and seam compound entirely stripped and renewed
- New custom bronze rudder on bronze rudder-post
- Laminated interior blocking for bow-thruster tube
- New floor timbers under the engine
- New engine beds with bronze knees
- New plywood working deck and frame, sheathed in fiberglass/epoxy, and fully sound- and vibration-insulated with Soundown lead-foam
- New custom watertight access hatches for tanks
- New custom bronze deck access hatch over the new Aquadrive coupling
- New Soundown-insulated, hinged, watertight engine box with storage lockers, drawers, and slate top
- Forward deck house surfaced with fiberglass/epoxy
- Forward access hatch with glass window replaced
- Two new bronze round opening ports in the forward face of the deckhouse
- Two new opening oval glass ports, one in each side of the house - in addition to the original four fixed ports
- Aft deck extended 18” forward to provide added storage beneath, and to cover the exhaust loop and the Vaccu-Flush toilet system and holding tank
- Topsides, house, and decks re-faired and painted to yacht standards

- 2001 Yanmar diesel engine serviced. Currently ~ 504 hours. Cruising speed 12 kts, max speed 18 kts. Range: Between ~ 250 and ~ 350 nautical miles, depending on speed
- Aquadrive thrust bearing with custom bronze mount, for noise and vibration reduction

ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS – All new

- One 4-D AGM engine-start battery – 105 AH, 1000 MCA
- Two 8-D AGM house batteries – 245 AH each
- Mastervolt “Master-Easy” battery monitoring system with digital readout
- Two Alternators on the Yanmar engine: Balmar high-output (165 AH) alternator for charging the house batteries quickly; and a standard Yanmar alternator for charging the engine-start battery
- Mastervolt 4,000 watt inverter-charger for 110-volt AC power aboard and charging the batteries while on shore power
- 50-amp bronze-plated shore-power intake plug and 50’ shore cord
- Rotary engine-start and house battery switches at the helm

- 123 gallons total fresh water. Two custom tanks: 28-gallon aluminum tank forward under the SB side cockpit; 84-gallon polyethylene tank aft under the cockpit deck; plus 11-gallon stainless steel hot-water tank

- SCAD tank-level monitoring system: WEMA sensors for all four tanks, digital display at helm

- 21-gallon integral black tank in the toilet system - see “Plumbing” below
